Madam Abida Parveen From South Asia Pakistan...

Saieen Zahoor’s melodious voice resonated these beautiful verses over the strains of the ek-tara on a balmy summer evening at Peeru’s CafĂ© in Lahore, recently.
The event was the three-day Mystic Music Sufi Festival by the Rafi Peer Theatre Workshop (RPTW) and the timing was perfect. Never has the message of Sufism been as relevant for Pakistan as now. But we shall come to that later.
The festival brought together some great performers of Sufi music and poetry including some new ones. These included Fakir Abdul Wahid, Taj Mastani, Shah Jo Rag Fakirs, Akbar Khamiso Khan and Jamal Din Fakir from Sindh; Saieen Zahoor, Surraiya Multanikar, Surraiya Khanum, Rizwan Moazzam Qawwal, Iqbal Bahoo, Imran Aziz Qawwal, Ustad Hussain Bux Gullu, Sher Miandad, Ghulam Muhammad Chand, Wahdat and Hasnain, Chand and Sooraj Khan, Pappu Saieen, Goonga and Mithu Saieen, Mehmood Farid Qawwal, Mansoor Malangi and Allah Ditay Lonay Wala from Punjab; Akhtar Chinar Zehri from Balochistan and Zarsanga from NWFP. However, disappointment for fans of Abida Parveen loomed large as she couldn’t make it to the event due to a delayed flight after her string of concerts in the UAE.

Abida Parveen is a rarity in the world of Sufi music, a female lead performer. She is the daughter of prominent Pakistani vocalist Ustad Ghulam Haider, who (somewhat bravely) ignored convention and allowed her to study under him, and she also accompanied him to various religious performances. After a time developing her abilities, she married Ustad Hussein Sheikh, an influential producer from radio pakistan, who also helped her further her career.

Although he was born in St. Louis, Aliaune Thiam -- aka Akon -- grew up in Senegal before he and his family (including his father, jazz percussionist Mor Thiam) returned to the United States and settled in New Jersey when he was seven. There he discovered hip-hop for the first time, as well as crime. He was eventually jailed, but he used the time to work on his musical ideas. Upon release, Akon began writing and recording tracks in a home studio. The tapes found their way to SRC/Universal, which eventually released Trouble, Akon's debut LP, in June 2004. The album was an interesting hybrid of Akon's raps and silky, West African-styled vocals with East Coast- and Southern-styled beats. The success of the song "Locked Up" raised Akon's profile, and he followed up in the fall of 2006 with Konvicted. Soon enough, two of the album's singles, "I Wanna Love You" and "Smack That," had made their way to the upper regions of the Billboard charts. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan

Charkha is not more than an album; it's a labour of love for all involved to carry on the legacy of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's Charkha is the most haunting record in the market right now. Though the hype around it may not have built up because of the subtlety of the record, but now it seems to have filtered in and through and regularly features on the charts. It's been a slow burner but on first listen one can tell that this is a record that will burn long and gain strength. Charkha is classic in every sense of the term. The videos on music channels all over, 'Tere Bina' and 'Kanday Uttay', are only the tip of the ice berg here. Charkha is music to listen to in solitude, preferably with dim lighting. The reworking of Bullay Shah's 'Charkha' and Shah Hussain's 'Sainyaah' included, most songs on the album are a reworking of the qawwalis in Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's repertoire. The only original compositions are 'Tere Bina', 'Na Janay Kahan' and the unsurpassable 'Jiya Dhadak Dhadak Jaye' that became a superhit in India in 2005 when Mahesh Bhatt used it for the film Kalyug. Already a star in India after 'Mann Ki Lagan', 'Jiya Dhadak Dhadak Jaye' ensured that Rahat become a voice in demand across the border; beyond the realm of the Bhatt family. He sang 'Naina' for Vishal Bharadwaj's critically acclaimed Omkara (2006), 'Main Jahan Rahoon' for the surprise blockbuster Namastey London (2007) , 'Bol Na Halke Halke' for Yashraj Films Jhoom Barabar Jhoom (2007) , 'Jag Soona Soona Lage' for the Shahrukh Khan magnum opus Om Shanti Om (2007) and the haunting 'O Re Piya' for Madhuri's come back film Aaja Nachle (2007). Yet it is Charkha, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's solo album that is truly satisfying listening for the qawwali aficionado as well as for those who like trippy lounge music of the sort that Thievery Corporation and Buddha Bar records have made so popular amongst the party crowd looking to chill out to sounds that carry on from where the DJ leaves off.The sound of CharkhaCarefully constructed by Rohail Hyatt, Charkha is a sonic delight. The visual landscape reminds one of a desert in bloom. The musicality is sparse but tasteful (barring the remixes of 'Charkha' and 'Tere Bin', that gradually race thumping into a manic assaulting beat, but more on those later). The album opens with the sublime 'Charkha', that reworking one of the immortal kalams of Bulleh Shah, that puts a whole new spin on the phrase 'the wheel keeps on turning'. With the twang of a guitar occassionally interjecting the more consistent percussion that seems to be modelled on the clapping that traditionally accompanies a qawwali performance, Rahat's vocals build up to the chant 'Aaja Har Charkhe De Gheray Main Tainoon Yaad Kardi'. The sound is modern and yet familiar because the form of qawwali is not interfered with and that has been Rohail Hyatt's aim throughout the album."You can't mess with the form," Rohail resolutely maintained when he set out to do Charkha years ago.Rohail seems to have learned how Westerners worked with Rahat's illustrious uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. There was Peter Gabriel's 'Mast Qalander' remix that burnt dance floor all over the world, but which remained an aberration for the true followers of qawwali and then there was Michael Brooks' interpretation of the Nusrat first in Mustt Mustt and then more noticeably in the super sublime album Night Songs that will never lose it's incredible replay value. Qawwali is music that you sink yourself into and let it seep in; even as electronica can make it more accessible to the modern world it is important that qawwali retain its essence, which is spiritual to the extent that it caused musician Jeff Buckley to famously comment "Nusrat is my Elvis".And this is precisely what Charkha does. It elevates Rahat to a whole new iconic level.

Pitbull On Punching Disruptive Fan: 'Natural Instinct Kicked In'

When making it rain goes wrong, Pitbull reacts. Amateur video of Pit onstage in Colorado recently hit the Net, showing the rapper punching out a fan. The scene starts with Pit entertaining the audience, when a man in the crowd started throwing money on the stage. Pit pulled the man onto the stage and he started throwing money in Pit's face, and Pitbull immediately knocked the guy down with a punch to the face.
"They don't show the whole clip of what happened," Pit told us Wednesday (May 27) of the video. "Before the song 'Bojangles,' I play a whole set and I only get three breaks. I was going into 'Bojangles' and this mutha----a had already made it rain, like, three times. He threw a gang of money in the air and I was scooting the money, giving it to the crowd. I didn't touch the money, but I was scooting it, giving it to the crowd."
Pit said he had enough and gave the guy a verbal warning from the stage.
"I told him, 'Look, dog, you already got three strikes. Don't make it rain no more. I'm telling you. I ain't gonna talk about it no more, I'm just gonna be about it. Don't do it no more,' " he recalled. "Boom, left it alone. I started 'Bojangles,' then about a minute later, he comes to the other side of the stage and throws money again."
From there, Pit actually extended his hand and pulled the man onstage.
"I'm bringing him onstage with no intention of doing nothing to him," he explained. "I'm bringing him onstage to say, 'Look, this the clown that's gonna f--- up your show. I'm getting rid of him. I'm letting y'all know right now. Don't nobody else make it rain.' When I bring the mutha----a up on the stage, he throws a wad of money in my face. When he did that, that's when natural reaction ... natural instinct kicked in."
Pit laid the guy out with one punch.
"No way, shape or form was that my intention. It was more like a reaction, self-defense," he explained. "Mind you, I've been in shows before and I done got hit with a bottle. Any time I see anything moving onstage, I'm cautious about it. You feel me? As soon as he threw that money, it was on from there."
The man was escorted out and the concert continued after Pit apologized to the crowd for the disturbance.
"That was the beginning of the show — five or eight minutes into the show," he said. "I have a hour-and-15-minute set. ... He made me feel [wild] like I felt back in the day. I'm in a profession now. I'm here to entertain. ... I heard he was a fan and he drove from a long way. When I saw the video, I said, 'Hell nah. He knew exactly what he was doing.' In any country when you throw something in somebody's face, it's disrespectful. When I looked at the tape, you could see he did that and was waiting like, 'What now? Yeah mutha----a, I just threw a wad in your face.' "
Fortunately for Pit's fans, the incident hasn't slowed him down — he has a slew of summer radio shows lined up for the next three months.

Britney Spears Shoots Fake Perfume Ad For Logo's NewNowNext Awards

Britney Spears already has a popular perfume line, but sales might skyrocket if her newest scent makes it into stores: a fragrance called 'Mo that carries the tantalizing tagline "One spray and the gays will run your way!"
Too bad 'Mo — and the video promoting it — is a spoof, part of the viral-marketing campaign for the Logo network's NewNowNext awards show. MTV News called up the brains behind the clip to get the inside scoop about how the project came together and why Brit decided to take part.

"She's having fun with her gay audience, because she's an official gay icon at such a young and tender age," said Christopher Willey, a Logo executive producer. (Logo and MTV are both owned by Viacom.)
Willey explained that the tone of the awards show is "very playful, irreverent, doesn't take it too seriously." When they decided to give their Always Next, Forever Now award to Spears, Willey approached the singer's label and management with the idea for the faux perfume ad.
"We [wanted] something that would be fun and playful that we can celebrate/mock, and we thought, 'It's her perfume career,' " Willey said. "Because everyone knows every holiday season they bring out those commercials of her running through a forest or a hotel."
Spears' people loved the idea, although Willey did have to explain the meaning of 'Mo, which is a term of endearment within the gay community. "Britney herself wanted to make sure that the punch line — which is the word 'Mo — wasn't offensive in any way," Willey said.
A spokesperson for Spears told MTV News the singer was not available for comment on the spoof.
Logo shot Britney's "One spray and the gays will run your way!" line on the Los Angeles set of her video for "If U Seek Amy" and filled in the rest with footage from music videos and a documentary. The package will open the NewNowNext show as an imaginary message from the program's sponsor.
The second annual awards show airs June 13 at 9 p.m. ET and will feature appearances by Lady Gaga, Vanessa Williams, castmembers from "The Real Housewives of New York City" and a musical performance by Eve. And, of course, Spears will be on hand to accept her award.

Pakistan Strings Band

Pakistan Strings Band:
Strings, as one music aficionado put it recently now fall into the category of "classic". This Strings fan is well into his 50s. With their melody, lyrics by Anwar Maqsood and a signature style that they have never veered from, Strings have become a listening habit in Pakistan. And they've penetrated so deep into our consciousness that they're not going anywhere. If Ali Azmat is about radical experimentation and newcomer Atif is all about hype, Strings are all about consistency and a mellow attitude that they have made uniquely their own. They are not about 'Garaj Baras' and are definitely not scratching their heads and wondering 'Hum Kis Gali Jaa Rahe Hain'? Faisal Kapadia and Bilal Maqsood are self assured, co-pilots of the enterprise that is the Strings and they're cruising along hitting all the right notes and that too all over the sub-continent!
You have released your new album, Koi Aanay Wala Hai, after a hiatus of 4 years. Why take such a long break? It usually takes us around three years each time. After Durr, it took us 3 years for Dhaani and now around 4 years for the new album. The main reason for such a delay was that we were doing a lot of concerts. We like to perform live songs from our album for our audience all over the world. Also, one needs to get into the mode of working on the new album. So we were making songs while we were touring and after the melodies were ready, we went into the studio to record them. We know it took us quite a while but we are happy with the results.
Describe Koi Aanay Wala Hai in your own words. We wanted to explore new avenues with it so that's why we wanted to have a new sound. A new sound doesn't mean that we are totally away from the Strings' sound but it's very important for us musicians to grow and that's what we have tried to achieve in this album. This is a positively hopeful album and has very uplifting songs. Earlier tracks such as Zinda, Akhri Alvida, Najane Kyoun and Beirut were very dark songs and as musicians, we wanted to go in a different direction. The lyrics in this album are amazing and you will also find a difference in arrangements. Koi Aanay Wala Hai has a very strong ”Strings” feel, but tracks like Aik Do Teen and Jago are very different. Then numbers like Titliyan, Kehdia, Humsafar and Sone Do have an entirely different feel to them. We wanted to try something new and we are thankful to God that we were able to achieve that.

Fall Out Boy Rock, Hand Out Octo-Drives On 'Today' Show

The guys in Fall Out Boy have always been multitaskers of the highest order (especially that Wentz guy), but even they might have outdone themselves this time.
On Friday (May 22), while they performed a tight three-song set on the "Today" show, they were also scanning the crowd for fans in homemade T-shirts, because two of those Fall Out fanatics would be walking away with one of those limited-edition FOB/ Mark Hoppus "Octo-Drives" they've been handing out in various clandestine ways (including getting MTV News in on the action).

We had people put their Twitter name [on a T-shirt] and give us the best reason for us to follow them on Twitter," Pete Wentz told "Today" host Matt Lauer in between performances. "And then we have a USB drive, and we're gonna pick two winners specifically from the show today. And who knows? They might get followed on Twitter."
That announcement drew squeals of joy from the crowd — most of whom were wearing Sharpie-marked white tees — and a rather puzzled look from Lauer. And then it was back to the performing: Fall Out Boy launched headlong into "What a Catch, Donnie," a subdued and pretty ballad that showcased frontman Patrick Stump's midrange and guitarist Joe Trohman's skillful picking.
That was about the only quiet moment of the entire performance, though. FOB also blasted through a pair of older hits — "Dance, Dance" and "Thnks fr th Mmrs" — which brimmed with energy: Wentz popping and locking (and pulling out some 360s) and drummer Andy Hurley mashing in chaotically measured beats. The crowd squealed with delight — and, per Wentz's Tweeted requests — they showered the "Today" show stage with their homemade T-shirts, so FOB could pick a pair of winners.

V Factory Debuts 'Love Struck' Video

Pop newcomers V Factory now have a slick new video to accompany the first single off their upcoming self-titled debut. In 'Love Struck,' directed by Scott Speer (who has worked with Ashley Tisdale, David Archuleta and Jordin Sparks), the five multi-talented singers show off their dance moves with a creepy slaughterhouse backdrop. "It looked like the set of a 'Saw' movie," Nathaniel Flatt tells PopEater. Fortunately they had their friends by their side. "The dancing scenes really were us jumping around with our best friends." We're sure they didn't mind the sexy Brazilian model, either.

Amy Winehouse Hospitalized, Nixes Homecoming Show

Los Angeles (E! Online) – Just when they thought she was in, they pulled her back out.
In what is likely a surprise to no one, Amy Winehouse has canceled plans to perform in London next week in what would have been her first U.K. appearance of the year.
The concert, scheduled to take place May 31, was one of many gigs planned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of her label, Island Records. It was due to be the final show of the weeklong celebration.
"Amy Winehouse's management has regretfully announced that Amy and her band will no longer be performing at the Shepherd's Bush Empire," her rep said in a statement.
"Amy would like to apologize to her fans who bought tickets for the shows."
No reason was given for the cancellation, though yesterday Britain's Press Association reported that Winehouse was taken to the hospital with chest pains.
While her hospitalization came in the wake of a fainting spell, the singer's management claimed she was simply dehydrated and released shortly thereafter.
It's the second time this month the singer's rep has blamed a fainting spell for a doctor's visit. It's also the second time this month that the Grammy winner has backed out of a performance.

Jack Peñate is back and will be playing the Futures Stage at T in the Park on Sunday 12th July. For his second album he decided to rip it up and start again and the offering 'Everything Is New’ is just that. Filling the same slot on the final day of revelry are Northern Irish rockers In Case of Fire who have been lined up to open the Radio 1/NME Stage on Sunday 12th July. Tipped as a top new talent, the band who have been described by NME as a 'skyscraping pop-metal hybrid', were the viewer’s choice of bands to watch out for on MTV’s 2008 'Spanking New’ coverage and were the opening act on the Kerrang! tour this year. Eminem's 'Beautiful' Hits iTunes

Eminem has gone on record about his battle with drug addiction in interviews with Vibe and XXL magazines recently. Now, the rapper's song "Beautiful," which premiered on iTunes on Tuesday (May 12), paints a vivid picture of the struggle he went through during his hiatus from hip-hop.
It's one of the most heartfelt recordings in Eminem's career. The song appears on his upcoming album, Relapse, due May 19. In his first-person narrative in Vibe, Em said the song is the only one he kept from the recordings he made during that dark period in his life. He's been sober for a year now, he said.
"There's only one song on the record that I produced. It's a track called 'Beautiful,' " he said in the magazine's June issue. "And one of the only reasons that I put that track on there is that I feel like it's the best song out of that batch that I did when I wasn't sober. At the time I felt like, 'This is it for me.' I wrote the first verse and a half in rehab, and when I came out, I finished it. It was the only song that marks that period without bringing me back to that place. Every other track not only didn't fit with the album, but when I listened to it, it would bring up bad memories."
The melancholy song samples Rock Therapy's "Reaching Out" and features Em revisiting his decisions over the past few years and how his life spiraled out of control.
"I'm just so f---ing depressed, I just can't seem to get out of this slump/ If I could just get over this hump/ But I need something to pull me out this dump," he raps on the track.

Adam Lambert And Kris Allen Talk 'American Idol' Finale

Going into Tuesday night's (May 19) final "American Idol" singing round, Kris Allen and Adam Lambert feel pretty loose and confident about their chances.
Looking chummy and seeming relatively relaxed amid the typically chaotic final days of "Idol" madness, the two singers perched on stools Monday afternoon for a press conference, during which they talked about their chances, what impact religion might have on the final outcome and how they're dealing with the pressure. Both, however, remained coy about what songs they would sing in their bid to become this season's champ.
Asked if he were feeling the pressure amid the massive support he's gotten from his home state of Arkansas, Allen demurred. "For me, I don't feel too much pressure right now," Allen said. "We've made it. ... I do feel like we've accomplished exactly what we wanted to accomplish. It's not a competition anymore. We're going to go out there and have a good show."
Lambert laughed and admitted that "it is possible" that Allen could benefit from the shifting of votes from last week's eliminated contestant, Danny Gokey. But he joked that although he's not from Arkansas, both men have fans from all parts of the country. "We'll see what happens," he said.
Both admitted to being a bit nervous before the show, with Lambert putting his jitters at about a "five ... I'll get more nervous right before." Allen said he's at "five or six," which would probably crank up to a 10 by the time the show rolled around.
Though much has been made of how different the two finalists are, Lambert said they were also alike in the most important way. "We both love music," he explained. "I think we share that. We get along really well. We were roommates early on in the competition. We're different, I think, as artists."
Allen chimed in: "We're totally different as musicians, as artists. ... I think we both have a passion, we want to do this, we wanted to do this for a long time, and we're both accomplishing that right now."
In a season that has featured a top 10 dominated by singers with close ties to the church, Allen reiterated that viewers should be basing their votes on the quality of singing on the stage. "For me, I hope that having the 'Christian vote' doesn't help with anything," said Allen, who has worked as a worship leader at New Life Church in Conway, Arkansas. "I hope it has to do with your talent and the performance that you give and the package that you have. It's not about religion and all that kind of stuff."
Lambert agreed and hoped viewers would vote on what kind of music they like to hear. "I don't think it has anything to do with your religious background, what color you are, your gender. It doesn't have anything to do with that. It's about music. That's really important to keep in mind."

Kris Allen's 'What's Going On': The Story Behind The CoverAllen was able to tap into his emotional side with the Marvin Gaye classic on 'American Idol

"American Idol" is not known for having its pulse on the headlines of the day. In fact, short of its on-hiatus "Idol Gives Back" charity franchise, the show has typically been blissfully oblivious to the world at large as it dinosaur-stomps its way through the ratings every spring.
But on Tuesday night's (May 19) final performance episode, producer Simon Fuller seemed to want to make a statement about the turbulent times we are living in by choosing Marvin Gaye's landmark protest song "What's Going On" for Kris Allen to sing. He chose Sam Cooke's equally heavy "A Change Is Gonna Come" for rival Adam Lambert, creating a powerful moment for the show. The Gaye song was a chance for Allen to tap into his emotional side and switch up the arrangement to suit his strummy, jammy vibe.

Kelly Clarkson Trusts 'Myself And My Gut' When Making An Album

With Kelly Clarkson's latest album, All I Ever Wanted, a hit with fans and critics alike, the singer admits that four albums into her career, she's happy that all her hard work is still paying off.
"I'm pretty proud of it," she told MTV News backstage at Z100's Zootopia concert in East Rutherford, New Jersey. "We worked really hard on it — really hard on it. So it's cool when it pays off. ... I don't ever want to do something I'm not proud of in 10 or 20 years. I want to make music I want to sing and I'm gonna be proud of."
Clarkson stays proud of the work she puts out by making sure she has a hand in every aspect of the album. "I don't listen to anyone on any records. I listen to myself and my gut," she said.
While she got some bad press for her previous album My December, Clarkson said she also had complete creative control over that project. "My December was no different than any other record," she said. "And if people actually listen to it, you'd find that it's a very pop record. It's made no different from any other record. There's 'Never Again,' which is the big pop anthem, and then there's the ballads like 'Sober.' It's very much my formula for every album."
She did get out of her element a bit for All I Ever Wanted, working with some new people and trying out a few different types of songs. Clarkson hooked up with Katy Perry for "I Do Not Hook Up" and OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder for "If I Can't Have You."
"It is about continuing with the formula, but that doesn't mean that you can't try something different," she said. " ... 'Ready' is different than anything I've ever done on an album. I've produced a song on the album. So we do definitely do different things on the albums, but the basic formula is variety. I never want to do the same song twice. I hate when people do that."

Eminem Producer Couldn't Believe MC Wanted 'We Made You' Beat

When it comes time for Eminem to release an album, he always sticks to his tried-and-true formula. The first singles are comical celebrity takedowns, featuring Em's revved-up Slim Shady persona on a track produced by Dr. Dre (think "My Name Is," "Without Me" and "The Real Slim Shady").
On "We Made You," however, the lead single from Relapse, another beatsmith set the foundation for Eminem's return: Connecticut producer Doc Ish.
The Hartford native has worked with some of the underground's finest rappers, from AZ to Talib Kweli. But when he created the beat for "We Made You," he never imagined it would land in the hands of Marshall Mathers. He originally shopped the record — with the same hook, sung by Charmagne Tripp — to Red CafĂ©, before D12 member Bizarre picked it up.
But after writing his own version of "We Made You," Bizarre called Doc Ish with news that Eminem wanted the record. Because Bizarre is such a jokester, though, Doc didn't believe him. So he hung up on him.
"He called me at a bad time, so when he was like, 'Marshall wants the record,' I was like, 'Yeah, right,' " Doc told MTV News. "He was like, 'No, seriously, I'm not playing.' And Bizarre is a comical dude, so it's hard to know if he's playing or not. I didn't have time that day; I was busy mixing a record for Saigon. So I basically hung up on him. So he called me back with his cousin, Gambino, from Hartford, and he's who I know Biz through. And [Gambino] was like, 'Ish, he's for real, he's not playing.' So they put me in touch with [Eminem's] management. I was still like, 'OK,' 'cause Bizarre plays jokes on people. But within five minutes, his management called, and they said they wanted the song. I believed in that song, but I didn't know it would make it to where it did."
The song was picked up in November of last year, and the video premiered last month on MTV.
The accomplishment served as a testament to Doc Ish's perseverance. In 2004, the producer, who suffers from lupus, endured heart problems that he struggled with into the beginning of last year. Once he finally got a grasp on things, Doc — a former rapper, who had to give up rhyming because of a lack of breath control from his condition — turned to producing with fervor. He still remains a part of his group, the Abnormals, consisting of Apollo Swyf, Colloso and Belly. But nowadays, he keeps his rhymes limited to short bursts.
In the meantime, Doc is working on a compilation album, Arbitration, that he hopes to release later this year. He's negotiating a deal for the project, which includes tracks with Sean Price, Kool G Rap and Bizarre.
He also, of course, hopes to land a track on Eminem's Relapse follow-up, due later this year.

T.I. And Mary J. Blige Collabo 'Don't Forget' Leaks

T.I. is finally rolling out those additional songs for the re-release of Paper Trail. On Wednesday, a record called "Don't Forget" hit the Net via the New Music Cartel, and Thursday (May 14), Atlantic Records confirmed the song is the first of Tip's new singles.
"Don't Forget" is a goodbye-for-now anthem with Mary J. Blige on the hook. "Don't forget to remember me," Mary sings on the chorus. "Please keep me in your heart/ If we ever have to part." Tip lets everyone know that he is just "gone momentarily" and not to "bury" him.
"N---as jumped up, cheered when I got my time," he raps. "Like, 'Yeah. One more year I got to grind'/ But get me losing off your mind/ May I remind you/ Ain't a another n---a that been through what I been through.
"It's on when I get back, don't forget that," Tip added.
The King of the South and the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul are set to shoot the video for the new song at an undisclosed location. In previous interviews, Tip mentioned he was planning a collaboration with Fall Out Boy that was supposed to be on the original version of Paper Trail, and a possible remix of "On Top of the World" where he would include a Kanye West verse that was scrapped from the original version. Tip and Kanye recorded the song before Ludacris jumped on.
T.I. was in New York earlier this week where he spoke at an anti-gun rally with Al Sharpton and Ja Rule.
"When I get back — 'cause I will be back — you'll see me standing stronger, wiser and richer," he told the crowd about his impending jail sentence.

Ciara Talks 'Saturday Night Live' Performance With Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake is known for his amazing dancing skills, but he didn't bust a move last Saturday night when he performed with his "Love Sex Magic" partner, Ciara, on "Saturday Night Live." When it came time to shimmy and shake, he left all the hot moves up to Ciara and her backup dancers while he played the keyboard. Not that anyone was complaining about watching Ciara dance.
"You know what? It was perfect because ... he wanted to kind of say, 'You rock,' " Ciara told MTV News at Maxim's Hot 100 party. "And I just kind of felt cool, 'cause Justin can play [piano] real well and he really gets into the music and it was, like, 'Hey, let's make you part of the band.' "
Having Justin in the background for the live performance was very different from the music video for the song, where the two dance quite provocatively with one another. "[We wanted to] do something different and make it fun. It was awesome to see him pick up the keys."
Earlier this month, Ciara told MTV News all about the video's most memorable moment — when she licks Justin Timberlake. "Let me tell you — it's so funny, I have to say this," Ciara said. "I had to lick his ear and do all that fun stuff and bite it. And he had a moment where he was kind of licking on my neck. We were both going back and forth. We were really just freestyling. And Miss Diane [Martel, the director] wanted something edgy, and we all wanted to find a cool way to do it. And that just felt right."

Jessica Simpson Performs At SeaWorld, Opens Up About Weight Comments

After receiving much criticism for her weight earlier this year, Jessica Simpson returned to the stage this past weekend wowing the crowd with her newly toned figure, UsMagazine.com reported.
During a gig Saturday at SeaWorld in San Antonio for the park's "Bud & BBQ" country-music series, Simpson graced the stage in a navy-blue dress but quickly changed into her now-signature Daisy Dukes. Only moments before hitting the stage, she
Tweeted, "Get ready for greatness, Shamu." After leaving the stage — where Simpson appeared to be all smiles — she Tweeted, "Just overcame my fear of sharks by kissing a killer whale!"

Jessica Simpson Performs In Texas
In addition to Tweeting about the show, she has also most recently Tweeted about how hard she's been working out with her trainer. She said, "Every time we have to do squats, and he yells at me, 'Get lower like you're in the club!' I don't squat in the club unless I am peeing!"
Simpson also recently opened up to
Vanity Fair about the media criticism she's faced in the last few months about her alleged weight gain and her reported onstage breakdowns and flubs. "When it comes to media criticism, that's just something I have had to train myself — literally train myself — to ignore," she said. "Because I'm the one up there onstage, and I can feel the energy of the crowd. And I know when I did good. And I know when I did great. And there wasn't one time on this tour when I felt like I butchered it. I mean, the way people make it sound, I should have never been singing in the first place."
Simpson, who recently made the leap from pop music to country music, added, "I know that every day the media's going to challenge me, is going to want to bring me down. But I feel like I'm at such a place that I own myself, and it's authentic. I own that authentic part of myself, and none of those words are harsh enough to make me believe them."

Lambert, Gokey and Allen compete for `Idol' crown

The pressure is on for Danny Gokey, Kris Allen and Adam Lambert.
There's just one week until the "American Idol" finale, and on Tuesday night the all-male trio competed for two spots in next week's much-hyped sing-off.
They each performed two songs, one picked by the judges' panel and the other chosen by themselves.
It was a last chance to make an impression on the voting viewers. Now, the aspiring pop stars await the verdict on Wednesday's results show.
As usual, Lambert wowed the panel with his daring vocal range and style. He sang the U2 anthem "One" — Simon Cowell's selection — and his personal choice: the Aerosmith classic "Crying."
"How do you hit those notes and still talk the next day?" asked Kara DioGuardi, one of the four judges on the top-rated Fox network competition.
Jumping in on the Lambert lovefest, Paula Abdul gushed: "We'll be seeing you next week and many years after that."
Not so fast, warned Cowell. The judge shrewdly noted that people should vote for the 27-year-old theater actor and not assume he's a shoo-in for the final showdown.
Strong performances by Gokey and Allen on Tuesday could challenge the expectation that Lambert — who appears on the latest cover of Entertainment Weekly — has the "Idol" crown in the bag.
Allen of Conway, Ark., was the only finalist to select a contemporary song — "Heartless" by Kanye West. DioGuardi praised Allen's cool interpretation of the R&B hit as "bold, brave and fearless," while Cowell revealed he'd written the married 23-year-old out of the competition until that performance.
Cowell and DioGuardi got into a spat over Allen earlier in the show. DioGuardi and Randy Jackson picked One Republic's "Apologize" for Allen, and Cowell complained the song was a "lame choice." Things turned ugly when Cowell zeroed in on DioGuardi, who had urged Allen to "take more chances" following his faithful cover of the pop hit.
"You can't choose a song for him and then blame him for the song," sniped Cowell, before DioGuardi covered up his mouth with her hand.
Gokey, 28, of Milwaukee, received high marks for his cover of Joe Cocker's version of "You Are So Beautiful." The panel thought he nailed it, and Cowell's praise was the icing on top: "I would call that a vocal master class."
Gokey's dancing, however, was another story during his rendition of Terence Trent D'Arby's "Dance Little Sister," chosen by Abdul.
DioGuardi said his "gyrating" was too much for her, while Cowell described Gokey's footwork in a word: "desperate."
Not that Gokey seemed to care.
"I want to sing that song!" he said.

Jay-Z, Ciara To Tour Together This Summer

Jay-Z and Ciara are planning to tour together this summer, with five dates announced so far, Live Nation confirmed Tuesday (May 12).
The special performances will kick off July 3 with a two-night stint at the Pearl at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas. The jaunt also includes stops in Chicago and Atlanta.
Ciara let the cat out of the bag Monday night on her
Twitter: "I will say it because the information has been leaked. Me and Jay-Z will be doing a 10-city tour run together! More details coming soon!"
However, a rep for Jay-Z told MTV News that the tour would not include 10 cities. In June, Ciara will support Britney Spears on the European leg of the Circus tour in June.
Ciara, whose latest album Fantasy Ride was released last week, appeared on "Saturday Night Live" (with Justin Timberlake on keyboards) and David Letterman's show in the past few days. Last week, she told MTV News about filming the steamy video for her
collaboration with Timberlake, "Love Sex Magic."
"Let me tell you -- it's so funny, I have to say this," she said. And that just felt right.
"It was really funny because you would have moments where she would go, 'What we're gonna do now is the licking and the kissing on the neck and we're gonna do this take, then cut. OK, we need one more take of that,' " Ciara continued. "And so it's licking on the neck, again, then his biting on my neck, again. It was really funny."

It's a Man's World on American Idol After Allison Iraheta's Ouster

And then there were three. But with more than 60 million votes cast, were we left with a truly great three?
Allison Iraheta, musically wise beyond her 17 years but still kind of a mystery as far as overall personality is concerned, will not be moving on.
"Cry Baby" became both her swan song and the theme of the evening's last few minutes as the Los Angeles native finally showed the sensitivity and heart that of course had to have been lurking beneath that heartrending vocal prowess.
So, despite the high note heard 'round the world, a bottom-three scare last week and a performance that was compared to eating ice for lunch, Danny Gokey, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen are in the Top Three.
Kris, pleasing to the eye if not always to the ear, was the first to be declared safe—news that prompted a hands-in-front-of-the-face gasp from the 23-year-old, whom Simon Cowell keeps badgering about being too humble.
Then golden tickets went to Adam, who's looked comfortable and primed for stardom since he first belted out "Black or White" eight weeks ago—and has now managed to avoid the fate of season-five "frontrunner" Chris Daughtry, who only finished fourth.
"At the time it felt like the world was coming to an end…but I got over it about 30 seconds later," said Daughtry, in the house tonight with his eponymous band to perform "No Surprise," the first single off their sophomore album.
Then it was down to Danny and Allison and...well, you know what happened next.
"I listened to it back, and I must say, I laughed the whole night," Danny said of that fateful final note of "Dream On," which has thousands upon thousands of views on YouTube.
"My own aunt muted the TV," he added.
The night started off like any other, with a group medley ("School's Out"), a Ford commercial (unbearable) and the promise of performances by stars incomparable (No Doubt) and in-house (Paula Abdul!!).
And in the middle of it all quaked the predominantly fierce foursome as they waited to hear whose American Idol train was letting him or her off in fourth place.
Even if you find Danny cocky, Kris boring, Adam shrieky or Allison surly, this was one of the better Top Fours in recent memory, one of the few that provided more "Yes!" than "Doh!" moments overall.
Before next week's show, Kris, Adam and Danny will head to their hometowns for the requisite local-makes-good lovefest, during which the mayor or other bigwig usually announces what song the judges want them to sing on Tuesday's multitune performance show.
Oh, and by the way—Paula's body looked great onstage, but if any part of "I'm Just Here for the Music" was actually coming out of her mouth tonight… then we'll eat Matt Giraud's fedora.
And Gwen Stefani, who blasted in from the past with "I'm Just a Girl," said that "the whole point" of her band's upcoming tour, kicking off next week in Las Vegas, is to prepare their fans for a new No Doubt album.

Eminem Freestyles During German TV Interview

"Cha Cha Cha." Not the famous rap song MC Lyte brought to life in the 1980s, the "Cha, Cha, Cha."

Eminem appeared on the German program "TV Total" earlier this week, and not only gave an interview, but kicked a freestyle over a beat host Stefan Raab called "Cha, Cha, Cha," while Raab and the house band played along.

"Here I go, lyr-ree-cal/ I have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm spir-rit-ual. ... I have no f---in' clue, what the f--- I'm doing," he reiterated in his rap before the talk show host sang.

Slim Shady also sat down for a interview, coming out in comical form, briefly wearing an anti-swine flu mask — and even began talking into the mic through it. He also learned several German swear words and heard about German rappers. Em also took some liberties with the loose broadcasting laws in Germany.

"I f---in' love it here! I can f---ing say anything. Hey look, it's raining d---s!" he yelled.

When the host asked him why he's been gone for the last four years, Em chalked it up to "drugs" and (less seriously) playing Ms. Pacman and, er, pleasuring himself.

Getting a little more serious, he talked briefly about his drug abuse.

"I went through a tough time with it — five, six years I struggled with it," Em said. "I'm a little over a year sober."

Em's new LP, Relapse, comes out on May 19 and on Thursday snippets of his video "Crack a Bottle" hit the Net. Preceding that clip were, of course, "We Made You" and "3 A.M."

Another single, "Old Time's Sake," was released to iTunes officially on May 5. The next song, "Beautiful," officially goes to the iTunes on May 12.

Cam'ron Reveals The Name Of His Tour With Jadakiss

NEW YORKJadakiss sat with all of hip-hop's big bosses, including Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes, in the new video for "Respect My Conglomerate." Now, the Yonkers, New York, lyrical champ is going to share a stage with another boss: Cam'ron. The two Big Apple stars are going on tour this summer, on the heels of their new duet, "Let's Talk About It."

"Shout-out to Jada, the whole D-Block," Cam'ron said Tuesday night after his show at Manhattan's Highline Ballroom.

Cam was a guest of Jada's at a concert at the Apollo Theatre earlier this year. In exchange, 'Kiss jumped on a track for Killa's Crime Pays LP.

"I did the show for Jada; he said he was gonna return the favor," Cam said. "And he kept it real, kept it 100. We just finished [the song] the day we put it out. We just finished it. Make sure you check that out too. Shout-out to everybody in the whole D-Block. We going on tour too. It's called 'The Bosses.' "

Cam just dropped a split video for "Cookies and Apple Juice" and "Silky."

"Video is crazy. We shot it in Miami," he said. "Lot of girls, lot of thongs, bikinis — lot of stuff I can't tell you on MTV, but it was just a lot. Excessive. Shout-out to everybody in Miami for coming through to the video."

Cam's Crime Pays comes out Tuesday. Another track he says to look out for is "Got It for Cheap."

"That's one of the oldest songs on the Internet," he said. "I did that about a year ago. Somebody did the hook. So I did it over, did the hook. It got a great buzz. It got, like, 8 million hits on the Internet. I felt the beat was real hard, I just went in on it."

50 Cent: Is He Still Firebug Suspect?

Forget da club. 50 Cent is in the clear.

Or is he?

The hip-hopster, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, has announced on his community blog, ThisIs50.com, that he is no longer a suspect in the 2008 blaze that gutted his New York mansion and nearly killed his former girlfriend and their then-10-year-old son.

"The police department and insurance investigators ruled that there is absolutely no proof or evidence suggesting that Curtis Jackson or any affiliated parties were involved," the statement reads. "Curtis Jackson has just been cleared of all the accusations. The investigation will continue until the guilty party is found."

Not so fast, say the Long Island cops. A spokesman for the Suffolk County police says the case remains open and no one has been declared beyond suspicion.

Fiddy's ex Shaniqua Tompkins, their child, Marquise, and four others barely escaped by jumping off a roof when the suspicious blaze swept through the $1.4 million home a year ago. She claims the rap star or his associates torched the house to get her out. Tompkins and Fiddy had been embroiled in a nasty legal battle at the time.

The estranged couple have since hammered out a custody arrangement that granted him visitation rights with Marquise. However, the "In da Club" performer has filed a $20 million defamation suit against Tompkins over the fiery accusation. Separately, a Manhattan judge dismissed a $50 million suit she filed against 50 Cent seeking half his assets.

Rihanna Cancels Comeback Concert

Don't call it a comeback…'cause it isn't one just yet.
Just a month after Rihanna was booked for her first public performance since her alleged assault by Chris Brown, the show has been abruptly scrapped.
The 21-year-old R&B star had been scheduled to perform later this month in the United Arab Emirates. But Yassin Matbouly, of would-have-been concert organizer Vibe Entertainment Management Agency, said in a statement that she's not yet ready to return to the stage.
"We want to share with you that Rihanna and her management will not be accepting to hold a public concert at this time as it is not appropriate timing for her," he said.
There was no immediate comment from Rihanna, who is expected to be among the glitterati in attendance at tonight's Costume Institue Gala in New York.
Coincidentally, the next court hearing for Brown's double felony case is May 28, the same day the concert was scheduled to take place.
Matbouly, who said the concert would likely have taken place in Dubai or possibly Abu Dhabi, speculated that the scope of the concert may have been intimidating. Organizers were looking for a 25,000-seat venue and, he said, the media attention would have been massive (though it likely will be whenever and wherever she does stage her return).
"Rihanna's management contacted us on Saturday and explained she was unable to come to the UAE in May, but said she is keen to still perform in the region.
"Vibe has been ready and was looking forward to putting this concert together for the crowd of the Middle East…This is very sad for us at this time knowing the concert will not happen, but we will not give up and we will continue to put our offer to Rihanna's management for a future date."
The concert producers are now eyeing dates for sometime this fall.

Gossip Girl' Star Leighton Meester Won't Choose Between Acting, Music

Leighton Meester might be the queen bee on "Gossip Girl," but she's just getting her start when it comes to the music industry. The actress/singer, who will release her debut album later this year on Universal, took some time out from shooting Cobra Starship's "Good Girls" music video to talk about the positive reviews she's getting for the leaked song "Birthday."

"I was working with really cool people on it. ... It's a really fun, great song," she said. "I am very happy with the reactions, and I love it, but there's a lot of other stuff that I'm really happy with that is not being leaked at the moment but will come out later on this year that I'm really stoked about."

Those songs are ones the TV star has been working on for quite some time. "I've been in L.A. for about a month now just working pretty steadily in the studio, and then last year, I was doing the same thing around this time," she said. "And before that, I was in my apartment, so it's a really professional big deal for me making real music."

Meester says some of her influences are Madonna, Whitney Houston and Cyndi Lauper, who she's looked up to for a long time. "When I was 3, [I would sing into the] hair brush — and when I was 20 [too]," the 23-year-old laughed. "It's a dream come true. This is crazy and awesome."

Meester doesn't feel any pressure to choose between acting and singing. "I don't know if I can really choose a favorite of what I want to do more or what I love more, 'cause I feel like I always felt I can do both," she said. "I feel like it goes hand in hand. Singing really is acting. In a lot of ways, it's much more personal. I love music, and being able to work on that is amazing."

Eminem Admits He 'Almost Died' From Drug Overdose

Eminem almost died.

The iconic MC tells Vibe magazine in its forthcoming issue that during a relapse, he overdosed on pills he acquired from an "acquaintance" and almost became one of music's greatest casualties.

"My doctor told me those mysterious new pills were methadone, which is used to wean heroin addicts off dope," he told the mag in its forthcoming "Real Rap" issue.

"Had I known it was methadone, I probably wouldn't have taken it. But as bad as I was back then, I can't even say 100 percent for sure. My doctor told me the amount of methadone I'd taken was equivalent to shooting up four bags of heroin. Even when they told me I almost died, it didn't click."

Em admitted to the publication that he was an addict and through his uncontrolled dependence, he began to identify with his mother, with whom he's had several public battles over the last decade.

"It's no secret I had a drug problem," he said. "If I was to give you a number of Vicodin I would actually take in a day? Anywhere between 10 to 20. Valium, Ambien, the numbers got so high I don't even know what I was taking."

After suffering a knee injury that required surgery, he was not prescribed painkillers, which led him to search his house for drugs he'd hidden.

"I started looking around my house to see if I had a stash box of Vicodin," he said. "I'm ransacking my house, finally find something in the basement, in a little napkin, seven and a half Vicodin — the big extra-strength ones — and a few Valium." He relapsed, and soon admitted he was an addict.

"It never once hit me that drug addiction runs in my family," he said. "Now that I understand that I'm an addict, I definitely have compassion for my mother. I get it."

Eminem told the magazine that he's been sober for a year, and that making his forthcoming LP, Relapse, due May 19 — from which "Old Time's Sake," a new song featuring Dr. Dre, leaked on Monday (May 4) — "I wanted to make an overall statement — I'm back. It was a slow process. You gotta remember I hadn't recorded a song sober in seven years. So it took me awhile to even feel like I could record a song sober ... I don't know the last time I shot a video sober, without drinking or taking anything. It's been years.

"I almost feel like a little kid again with rap," he continued. "I wanna play around with different flows. If I don't feel like it's what I'm fully capable of, if there's one weak line, I wanna change it. Rap was my drug. It used to get me high and then it stopped getting me high. Then I had to resort to other things to make me feel that. Now rap's getting me high again."

30 Seconds To Mars Reveal Details Of Kanye West Collaboration

Earlier this month, Kanye West got people talking (and not about the whole "gay fish" thing) when he posted a photo of himself, Killers singer Brandon Flowers and 30 Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto on his blog and wrote that the trio were working on a "dope-ass song" for 30STM's new album.

Aside from saying that he worked the MPC sampler while Flowers played some keyboard, West revealed very little else about the song (he did, however, add that the "sh-- was dope"). Leto wrote a post on 30STM's site a few days later — in which he revealed that the song was called "Hurricane" — but there's been no other updates on the collaboration.

Until now. On Monday, when MTV News went to Leto's Los Angeles home, we asked him about working with Kanye on the track, and here's what he had to say:

"I had actually brought up [the idea of working with West] some time ago, but it's pretty unbelievable that it actually happened," Leto said. "He came by here, he was here in the studio, and we did some initial kind of listening, and he did some singing, and we knew we needed to kind of follow up and finish things, so I went over to Hawaii [with] an engineer and a small crew, and we had a great time."

Leto said that "Hurricane" features West's voice, au naturel, a decision he made even though the rapper/producer has trafficked almost exclusively in Auto-Tune as of late (like last year's 808s & Heartbreak). And surprisingly, the notoriously headstrong West listened.

"This is Kanye singing. I happen to think he has a really great voice. I like his voice a lot," Leto said. "My favorite is when he sings, as opposed to rapping, and I told him that as well, that I really liked him as a singer. But the Auto-Tune thing doesn't really bug me."

But there is one similarity between "Hurricane" and West's 808s: the icy sentiment. Seems both come from the same cold, dark place, be it the recesses of West's love-torn heart or, you know, Berlin, where Leto wrote the track.

But there is one similarity between "Hurricane" and West's 808s: the icy sentiment. Seems both come from the same cold, dark place, be it the recesses of West's love-torn heart or, you know, Berlin, where Leto wrote the track.

"I wanted to work with him before 808s, but ... there was something about the direction that he headed in that album that lent itself to the song," Leto said. "I wrote 'Hurricane' in Berlin in the winter in 2007. It was winter, it was getting dark at like 3:30 in the afternoon, and it could go either way. It could be incredibly comforting or incredibly depressing. Thankfully, it was a little bit of both. It was inspiring nonetheless."

White Stripes Drummer Meg White Engaged

Meg White is getting married.

The White Stripes drummer has gotten engaged to Jackson Smith, the son of iconic punk poet Patti Smith and late MC5 guitarist Fred Smith. The couple will tie the knot at a May 22 ceremony in Nashville, Tennessee, according to the Detroit Free Press.

The newspaper quotes several sources as saying that the couple met last summer and have actually been engaged for several weeks. They live in White's Detroit home and chose Nashville as the location for their wedding due to privacy concerns.

"They don't want it to be a circus," the paper quotes a source as saying. "They want it to be about the two of them."

Smith was born outside of Detroit but moved with his mother to New York City after the death of his father in 1994. After high school, he came back to Detroit and played guitar in local acts like Back in Spades, as well as in his mother's backing band. His late father, Fred, was the guitarist for legendary Motor City agit-rockers the MC5.

It will be the second marriage for White, who was famously wed to White Stripes frontman Jack White from 1996 to 2000, though the couple attempted to play off their relationship as that of brother and sister.

The Stripes are currently taking a break as Jack focuses on his new side project, the Dead Weather. He currently lives in Nashville and, according to the newspaper, is expected to attend the ceremony.

The newspaper claims that the couple are also planning to hold a reception in Detroit after their Nashville nuptials.

David Archuleta Expresses Sympathy For Death Of David Cook's Brother

David Archuleta is sending his love and sympathies to David Cook after news broke that the 2008 "American Idol" winner's older brother, Adam, died of cancer over the weekend.

"It really struck me when I heard about the news of Cook's brother," Archuleta said in a statement. "I know they had been struggling with it for a while, so my heart really goes out to them."

Adam, 37, had been battling brain cancer for over a decade, and Cook often paid tribute to his brother on the show. In his statement, Archuleta continued, "It's so admirable the way he's handling it, though, and it's amazing to see him there as an example for millions of other people who have also been affected the same way he and his family have. I'll be keeping him in my thoughts and prayers, and hope the Cook family stays strong."

On Sunday at the 12th annual Race for Hope 5K run in Washington, D.C., where Cook served as grand marshal just a day after his brother died, Cook told the crowd, "I actually lost my brother yesterday to a brain tumor, and I couldn't imagine being anywhere else right now. I lost one today, but I gained 9,000, and I will be here every year that they will have me."

"Idol" judge Paula Abdul told People that Adam Cook was part of the show's "extended family," saying he "supported his brother wholeheartedly, even through his own fight. My heart goes out not only to David, but his family as well."

Fellow judge Simon Cowell also had kind words for the family, telling the magazine, "I was incredibly saddened to hear the news. I met Adam Cook a few times at 'American Idol.' He was an incredible guy, and right now my thoughts are with David and his family."

Jay Weinberg Feels 'Super Fortunate' To Play On Bruce Springsteen Tour

Drummer Jay Weinberg might be 18 years old, but he has earned a regular spot performing with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band on their Working on a Dream Tour.

As the son of longtime E Street drummer Max Weinberg — who first joined the Boss onstage in 1974 and is the bandleader of the Max Weinberg 7 on the upcoming "Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien" — Jay has joined the ranks of a few other rock-star kids who have inherited their father's knack for drumming, such as Ringo Starr's son Jason Starkey (the Who, Oasis) and Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham's son, Jason.

After playing in several bands in high school, Weinberg's drumming reached a level that Springsteen himself took an interest in, leading to his first show onstage with the E Street Band last summer at Giants Stadium, when he performed "Born to Run." It was such a success that the Boss looked no further when he needed to choose a drummer to fill in for Max during the European dates of the Working on a Dream Tour in June while the star drummer stays for his spot on "Conan."

"I got a phone call from Bruce, who said to me, 'Jay, as you know, I have this band, and in this band, we have the greatest drummer of all time, who has a scheduling conflict. And when I asked him how we could resolve this conflict, he gave me your name and number.' "

As a college freshman at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, and the drummer of New York punk band the Reveling, Weinberg has a busier schedule than most teens, beginning rehearsals for the E Street tour back in February. Weinberg has been performing a number of songs most nights on the current U.S. dates, playing as many as 11, like at Wednesday's show in Philadelphia.

Now under Springsteen's wing, Weinberg said that it has been "mind-blowing" to play beside one of the most prominent figures in rock-and-roll history.

"Bruce lays it out pretty simple the way he wants it. He's a great teacher, coach and motivator. When I'm doing something right, I can see it in his eyes, he's smiling," Weinberg said. "He's a guy I've respected since I've been around this band, and to have this connection is pretty untouchable."

As far as stepping into his dad's shoes, Weinberg noted that he could never take his father's place and sees it more as an honor to have the opportunity to share the stage with the man who influenced his passion for music in the first place.

Weinberg told MTV News that his drumming career began when he was just 13, when he discovered one of his father's old drum sets in his basement — but not just any drum set.

"I remember he had these classic cymbals, like the ones he used on Born to Run and Born in the U.S.A. I took them, set them up and just mashed them, and now they have all these chunks taken out of them. I used all of his old gear, but it was for a good cause: for me to learn the drums," Weinberg said.

According to Weinberg, who noted he has had a "deep connection to the music world his whole life," his interest in music developed as early as his toddler years, when his mother played classical music and his dad performed regularly in massive arenas around the world. Weinberg's passion progressed further, thanks to his father, who brought him to concerts and helped hone his musical tastes.

"When I was 9 or 10, my dad brought me to Ozzfest to see Slipknot," Jay recalled. "They had been on 'Conan,' and my dad was like, 'You have to see these guys. They're really crazy, they wear masks, are really intense, and they're super scary — you'll love them!' I was immediately sold, and I've been a fan of really heavy and intense music ever since."

"[My dad] is one-of-a-kind with his style, sound and way of playing. I've been trying to channel my four to five years of experience and grasping that sort of old-school drumming feel to make the transition. I'm jumping into 40 years of experience, but I think being my age has a lot of cool aspects to it," he said. "It adds a different dynamic to it. It's youthful, it isn't better or worse. It's just different."

Although Weinberg is unsure of whether he will have a future with the E Street Band beyond this tour, he said he is just enjoying the surreal experience of it right now.

"Doing this at 18, I could imagine it's a summer job that anybody would want, and I'm super fortunate to be able to be doing it at my age," he said. "It's really crazy to wrap my head around fully. I'm signing autographs and taking pictures and doing all this stuff I never thought I'd be doing at my age. It's getting more comfortable, and I'm loving it."

Ashanti Studying Diana Ross' Performance To Prepare For 'The Wiz'

Ashanti knows a thing or two about visiting Oz. Not only has she played Dorothy in the Muppets version of "The Wizard of Oz," but she also played the Wicked Witch of the West for a charity production of "Wicked."

So this summer, when she reprises her role as Dorothy in the NY City Center Encores! Summer Stars production of "The Wiz," a role made famous by Diana Ross in the 1978 movie version, the singer will spend a lot of time in front of her TV to do some research. "I'm excited. I watched the DVD twice already," she told MTV News. "I'm definitely going to have it on repeat."

Ashanti is using her nerves to prepare for the part. "I think it's definitely going to be pressure, but in a good way. Broadway is so prestigious, and just getting that experience and getting to work with more seasoned actors is exciting," she said. "Broadway, it's a horse of a different color."

Although she's had some experience in the role of Dorothy, the last time around she was acting alongside Muppets. She said she would jump at the chance to get Diana Ross' advice. "I actually saw her," Ashanti recalled. "I did a Cartier event last year, and she performed, and I was like, 'Oh, my God!' She was so sweet and so down to earth."

Ashanti said that she doesn't know who else will be in the production, which will run from June 12 through July 5 at the New York City Center, but she did have a suggestion for the role of Toto. "What's so funny is that I have my own teacup Yorkie named Mimi," she said. "And I'm like, 'Can they just let me use Mimi?' "

No Doubt Hope To Reach A 'Fresh Batch' Of Fans On Tour

On Saturday, No Doubt will return to the stage, after an almost five-year hiatus, at the Borgata Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. But who will be in the audience? Die-hard ND fans? Squealing tweenie-boppers weaned on Gwen Stefani's solo albums?

No one seems to be sure — not even No Doubt themselves. Then again, things have always been that way for them.

"I think there will be a lot of new people, and that's exciting. That's what makes this fresh and new, is the fact that the dynamic has changed," guitarist Tom Dumont said. "A lot of bands put out record after record after record, and I think having a break makes it more fresh and exciting. It's a fresh batch of people coming, plus the old fans. It's perfect."

"But that's nothing new for us, because even the first nine years, before we even had a record, we always had different audiences that followed us as we changed," Stefani added. "Certain people were into what we were doing at the time, and we were always changing and evolving, and we never had any limits on what kind of music we would write. We'd gain some and lose some, and that's happened through the entire time we've been together.

"It's always exciting to get in front of new audiences. I got to experience — on my tour — some of the young girls that were there. ... That was the most rewarding thing for me," she continued. "Just seeing them out there, because they're so young, it's their first concert, they have their makeup on, even though they're really not supposed to be wearing it. I hope they show up again this time out. I loved it."

The landscape has shifted since the last time No Doubt toured — back in 2004, on a double-bill with Blink-182. And while that might pose a concern for concert promoters, ND aren't worried about filling the seats this summer.

"It's all about music. ... At the end of the day, you put music in people's ears, they hear recordings, they come to the shows," Dumont said. "Technology may change, and pop culture may change, but music doesn't. Everybody loves it."

And besides, there's more pressing matters to worry about — like getting the Stefani clan up to date on the No Doubt back catalog before the tour starts.

"I'm trying to get [2-year-old son] Kingston to listen to the No Doubt records. ... He didn't know the No Doubt records, so now I'm forcing him to listen to them, and I think he's going to get into it," Stefani laughed. "If I can get him to stop listening to Miley. He's listening to the Disney Channel a lot. ... But I think [9-month-old son] Zuma is more of a No Doubt fan than King is."
